Read the spec, not the headline
silicone rubber and thermoplastic elastomers differ in chemistry. Cured silicone rubber is cross-linked, while TPE is a family of thermoplastic elastomers. That distinction alone won't tell you a finished doll's softness, tear resistance or usable temperature range; formulation, paint and construction all play a part.
Ask the seller to name the head and body material separately. A dropdown offering “silicone” might only refer to an upgraded head. The silicone versus TPE guide gives useful background, then check the specific model rather than assuming every product from a brand shares the same material.
Do the parts actually fit?
A compatible neck connector matters just as much as matching height or appearance. Ask for the connector type, dimensions and a clear picture of the parts being supplied. Don't assume two heads are interchangeable just because both listings call the figure life-size.
- Head model and body model identifiers
- Neck connection dimensions and adapter requirements
- Skin-tone comparison under the same lighting
- Replacement availability and warranty for each part
Two materials, two care routines
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for each component. A cleaner, adhesive or repair treatment that suits one material can damage another finish entirely. Steer clear of flame, hot-water or solvent tests meant to identify a material — these can wreck the figure and don't prove anything about product safety.
Before buying, ask for written cleaning and drying instructions and the names of approved repair products. Our care guide gives you questions to put to the maker, not permission to override model-specific instructions.
Compare the complete delivered configuration
A base price isn't a like-for-like comparison if one quote includes a silicone head and another doesn't. Compare the same head, body, skeleton options, shipping destination and warranty. Ask for an itemised quote and keep the order confirmation.
The Irontech review, Starpery review and WM Doll review explain why exact model materials matter so much. These are editorial brand overviews, not certificates for any one product. For a full-silicone build, weigh up makers in our brand reviews.
Frequently asked questions
Does Silicone TPE mean the materials are blended?
Not necessarily. A listing may describe separate material choices or a hybrid head and body. Ask for a component-level specification rather than inferring a blend.
Is a hybrid always better value?
No. Compare the complete configuration, required care, warranty and delivery costs. A lower headline price doesn't mean a lower total cost.
